Palatal Expanders | Creating Space for a Healthier Smile
What Is a Palatal Expander?
A palatal expander is a custom orthodontic appliance used to gently widen the upper jaw (palate). This treatment is commonly recommended for patients often children or teens who have a narrow upper jaw, crowding, crossbite, or breathing issues related to jaw structure. Expanding the upper arch can create the necessary space for teeth to align properly and improve the overall function of the bite.
The appliance is typically attached to the upper molars and includes a small key used to gradually activate the device at home. Over time, this gentle pressure helps guide the bones of the palate to widen naturally and safely.
When Are Palatal Expanders Needed?
Palatal expanders are often used in growing patients whose jawbones are still developing. Common conditions treated with expanders include:
- Crossbite, where the upper teeth bite inside the lower teeth
- Severe crowding due to a lack of space
- Narrow arch development
- Impacted teeth or delayed eruption
- Breathing issues or airway concerns caused by a narrow palate
In some cases, expanders may be used before braces or aligners to prepare the jaw for better overall alignment.
What to Expect During Treatment
Palatal expansion is a gradual, controlled process. Once placed, the expander is activated at home by turning a small screw using a special key—usually once per day. Dr. Chou and her team will guide you through the process, provide detailed instructions, and monitor your progress closely through regular appointments.
The active phase of expansion typically lasts a few weeks, followed by a retention period where the appliance remains in place to stabilize the bone in its new position. Most patients adjust quickly and experience only mild pressure or tightness during activation.
